Unibody Design
Traditionally, notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part–the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable–perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.
LED-Backlit Display
LCD displays typically use cold cathode fluorescent lamps, or CCFLs, to create light and project a picture onto a screen, and this creates two problems–the lamps require more space and they take more time to warm up to full brightness. The MacBook Pro uses LED backlight technology to create the same amount of brightness in less space. And unlike fluorescent lamps, an LED backlight reaches maximum brightness instantly. Finally, a new, smaller iSight camera is concealed behind the display for quick access to video chats and snapping pics for uploading to social networks.

Additionally, conventional CCFL displays use mercury to create a backlight and arsenic to prevent irregularities in the glass. The LED-backlit display on the MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is both mercury- and arsenic-free. LED backlight technology also conserves energy: This display requires up to 30 percent less power than a CCFL display.
Buttonless Multi-Touch Trackpad
With no button on the durable glass trackpad, there’s more room to track and click–left, right, center, and everywhere in between. Without a separate button, the spacious trackpad gives your hands plenty of room to move on the large, silky glass surface. It also incorporates Multi-Touch gestures–including swipe, pinch, rotate, and four-finger swipe–and even more natural inertial scrolling–an intuitive way to scroll through large photo libraries, lengthy documents and long web sites. If you’re coming from a right-click world, you can right-click with two fingers or configure a right-click area on the trackpad.
Long-Lasting Battery
The new energy-efficient architecture in every MacBook Pro, along with automatic graphics switching, gives you dramatically longer battery life. On a single charge, the battery in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro lasts up to 10 hours. And you’ll get up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles–that’s nearly three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries. Advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging allow the battery to maintain charging capabilities longer and determine the optimal way to charge the battery’s cells. Because the battery lasts up to five years, MacBook Pro uses just one battery in the same time a typical notebook uses three. That makes for less waste. And that, in turn, makes for one environmentally friendly battery.
Environmental Considerations
Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro.
Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they’re designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor–CPU or GPU–is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room.
The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR qualification. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer’s typical annual power consumption.
Also, every MacBook Pro model has earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it’s designed and manufactured.

Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop Customer Review
I have been buying polycarb Mac laptops though the iBook and MacBook generations and love them. Starting with the first dual-USB white laptops in 2003 Apple has consistently offered a laptop just under 00. And with discounts or refurbs you can often find one in the 0-900 range. This is a great deal as I haven’t been able to find something from the PC world to stack up in raw performance for this value price. And then beyond that Apple offers Steve Job’s captivating designs, superior battery life, plus manufacturer supported UNIX with a stunning UI (OS X).
I have always liked my polycarb laptops for a few particular advantages:
1. The price
2. The polycarb shell is very durable. It scratches easily, but otherwise takes a beating
3. Against the “Pro” laptopts the polycarb shell allows better WiFi reception, less metal shielding the antenna.
4. Performance. The polycarb is basically as powerful as the bottom “Pro” laptop. A tad slower in processing speed perhaps, but not significantly for most apps. I am particularly impressed with the latest 2.2 GHz units.
Since my primary work is numerical computation run from the command line I’m not held back by the weaker video card in the polycarb. I can even say that my current MacBook keeps up, within 10%, with my 2.8GHz workstation at work (running Vista or Win7).
The polycarb lacks a few things, of course, against the “Pro” line. The graphics hardware is weaker and the keyboard is not backlit. I also believe my Pro’s have a slightly better keyboard touch, but I have always found Mac’s at all levels to have excellent keyboards. From others I hear they are on the soft side. For me they are ideal for my typing.
A few things I lament about the latest polycarb and Apple in general is the internalization of the battery and sealing of the keyboard. Apples definitely lag the PC world in that they are not easily opened up. Now even the battery sealed in. So you can’t carry a swappable spare for a long trip. Shame on Apple for profiteering this way. But as the rest of the product, and OS X, offer so much, I can’t resist and I’ll continue enjoying Mac’s.

I am very eager to review this product but cannot do so as I have yet to receive it.
I pre-ordered it, as the Amazon website listed Oct 22 as availability date. That date passed and there was no communication from Amazon. After inquiring with them, they gave me a new estimate.
Finally the computer shipped on the new estimated date, but it has yet to arrive. Amazon did not have the emotional intelligence to expedite shipping despite the product being delayed.
Now I am concerned that the product might not be up to snuff or the Amazon description inaccurate.
Check back in 3 days. I will hopefully have my item by then. And don’t pre order items from Amazon — unless it’s a book or CD.

It is November 4 and I finally have my machine. I have been playing with it for the past three hours.
The performance has been better than I expected. I preordered the machine with Windows 7 and a new ULV processor – both that haven’t been tested extensively in the market. But as I said, so far so good. I have purposely tried to multi task and my system has not slowed down. The computer boots up pretty fast and Windows 7 is easy enough to navigate.
I had a little moment of panic when I first got the item because it says Intel Centrino 2 inside, but Amazon description said Core 2 Duo. After some research online (and no thanks to Amazon OR Lenovo) I figured out that Centrino 2 is the technology that includes the Core 2 Duo processor.
The internet connectivity is amazing – it connects to my home wireless network so much faster than my HP laptop (now 4 yrs old).
The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because it feels a little plasticky. I am realistic that I cannot expect the world for the price I paid, still I was hoping for better. I’d be extremely concerned about dropping it or any hard shakes. I have also come to the realization that even though computer prices have come down, quality has been compromised. Anyway, I am consoling myself that the insides will last way longer than I think! The other annoying thing is the synaptics touchpad. The click buttons are a little noisy and I don’t know how, but seems like by some movement of my palm, the font size on the screen is quickly reduced. I don’t yet know how to stop this feature.
Nice keyboard and look and feel. Very sleek, light and thin. The pictures on Amazon are an accurate reflection. I cannot wait to connect it to my HDTV and experience the playback quality. Happy to have an HDMI port. But no S video or other kind of port for older devices.
Quick to install and use out of box. No zillion CD Roms to contend with or software to uninstall. Overall I am satisfied. And have ripped off all the crazy stickers in anticipation of having a good long relationship with my new machine. Fingers crossed.

Jump Lists
New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You’ll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can “pin” whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don’t just show shortcuts to files. I have just received this laptop a couple of hours ago, so these are my first impressions:
– keyboard: I almost did not buy this laptop because of other reviewers comments on an allegedly lame keyboard and almost unusable track-pad. I decided to give it a shot anyway. I’m glad. The keyboard (I’m typing on it right now) is in fact quite a bit nicer than most laptops I have had, and I’ve gone through 10 laptops in 2009, this one’s my second for 2010, the other one being a brand new macbookpro 15″ purchased in January to give some context)
When it comes to laptop typing, I’m particularly picky. This keyboard is solid, well put together, full size almost and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it has a dedicated page up / page down set of keys which do not require the Fn+arrow gymnastics some of the other brands put us through. This, my friends, is a keyboard that has been developed by someone who knew (s)he would have to use it. And it shows.
The chiclet thing is ok, we all got used to it since apple big push for it, so that’s nothing out of the ordinary.
– track-pad: the other thing that held me back was the track-pad. Granted it isn’t the best in the land but I have no idea what the other reviewers found in there that they actually found to be almost a deal breaker. I will say that it’s slightly to sensitive, so it will click sometimes when the cursor is “on the way” to an icon. You may start applications inadvertently. hmmm, ok but it still will let me use the laptop when I’m on the plane and I don’t have room for an external mouse. And I’ll use a mouse (microsoft arc, best thing out there) when real estates allows.
the gestures work remarkably well. As some other commenters said, nothing close to apple’s though.
– quality: some people have said this unit to be creaky. They’re right. It’s not worse than my toshiba R600-S4212 which sells for ,500 right now. So I don’t consider this to be terrible. It compares very well with my Vaio Z series which we bought for ,800, so not bad in that regard.
– hd: this is the scary part in my opinion. As I said, I JUST got the unit, and when I pick up the laptop while it’s loaded (I’m a developer, I often have code building in the background while I’m surfing the web for documentation) and that’s SCARY. it sounds like the drive head is touching the platter or something. That is truly my worst concern. I have looked at the bottom of the unit and there is a door for the hard drive, which is a 2.5″ so I may be able to take the wacky drive out and replace it with an after market ssd for my own peace of mind when I’m traveling.
– screen: as good as anything, I think this is really one of the strong point of this little guy. it’s clear, contrast is good, vertical angle is a little funny: you get a much better quality if you open the screen all the way. For people used to only have the screen propped at 90 degrees, it may be something to adjust to. Horizontal angle is good, which is a bummer in my case, I’ll have to buy a privacy film because the person next to me on the plane would have no problem reading on my screen.
- webcam: never mind. It’s a joke. That’s all I have to say about that. It’s still nice that they put it in.
– battery life: can’t comment, I haven’t the unit long enough to say anything about that. I will say that the a2 comes with the longer-lasting 5600mAh 8-cell battery 84Wh. Same battery as in the ul50.
– weight: hmmm, I would say it is surprisingly heavy for its size in all honesty. It’s almost like it’s make of lead and enriched uranium. And don’t blame it on the battery. It’s still ok, but definitely waaaaay heavier than the toshiba r600. it’s also less than a third of the price, so, you do get what you pay for.
I will edit this as I go if experience tells me otherwise..

carrying the laptop from my office (downstairs) to my bedroom (upstairs), the hd make loud noises like the heads were hitting the surface and caused the laptop to cease functioning altogether.
I would strongly recommend anyone buying this little laptop to include a 2.5″ SSD in the purchase to make it truly usable. This HD is just non functional for a laptop. Maybe I have a bad unit but if so, it does speak to some other reviewers concerns about overall quality. I’m fortunate enough to have a macbookpro I could fall back to in order to remain functional for work this morning but this is a major issue. I’m debating whether to RMA the unit.
